Background of the study:
Cultism, characterized by secretive affiliations and ritualistic practices, has increasingly infiltrated the educational environment in various parts of Nigeria. In Ikere Local Government Area, Ekiti State, secondary school students have become vulnerable to the influences of cult groups (Ibrahim, 2023). The allure of belonging, combined with the promise of power and protection, often draws adolescents into these groups, exposing them to hazardous behaviors and criminal activities (Afolabi, 2024). The involvement in cultism can lead to disruptions in academic performance, psychological trauma, and even violent confrontations, affecting both the individual and the broader school community (Ibrahim, 2023). Social disintegration, family instability, and inadequate school monitoring further compound the risk factors, making the educational environment a fertile ground for cult recruitment (Afolabi, 2024). This study aims to explore the extent to which cultism affects secondary school students in Ikere, examining both the underlying causes and the consequent impacts on their academic and social development (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
The penetration of cultism into secondary schools in Ikere Local Government Area has raised significant concerns regarding student safety and academic performance (Afolabi, 2024). The influence of cult groups has been linked to increased incidents of violence, disruption of school activities, and deteriorating mental health among students (Ibrahim, 2023). Despite awareness programs, the recruitment of students into cultism persists, highlighting the need for a comprehensive investigation into the factors driving this phenomenon and its adverse effects on the educational system (Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the prevalence of cultism among secondary school students in Ikere.
To examine the effects of cultism on students’ academic and social lives.
To propose intervention strategies to prevent cult recruitment in schools.
Research questions:
How prevalent is cultism among secondary school students in Ikere?
What are the academic and social impacts of cultism on students?
What measures can be taken to prevent cultism in secondary schools?
Research Hypotheses:
Cultism is significantly prevalent among secondary school students in Ikere.
Participation in cult activities adversely affects academic performance.
Preventive interventions can reduce the incidence of cultism in schools.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it highlights the detrimental effects of cultism on the youth, particularly within the educational sector. The findings will assist educational authorities and policymakers in developing targeted interventions to safeguard students, enhance academic performance, and promote a secure school environment in Ikere (Ibrahim, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating the impact of cultism on secondary school students in Ikere Local Government Area, Ekiti State. It focuses exclusively on the educational implications and personal well-being of the students.
Definitions of terms:
Cultism: The practice of belonging to a secret society characterized by ritualistic activities.
Secondary school students: Adolescents enrolled in secondary education institutions.
Academic performance: The level of achievement in educational settings, typically measured by grades and test scores.
